Prof. Dr. Aziz Sancar
Nobel Prize Winner Academician,
Biochemist, Molecular Biologist
Born in Savur district of Mardin, Aziz Sancar graduated from Istanbul University Medical School in 1969 at the top of his class. After working as a physician in a community health center in Savur for two years, he went to Johns Hopkins University with a NATO-TÜBİTAK (Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye) scholarship and continued to research there for nearly two years. Then he returned to Türkiye. However, he wanted to complete his studies in the US, so he went to the University of Texas at Dallas. He joined the university's molecular biology program and Claud Stanley Rupert's laboratory team. In this laboratory, Sancar and his advisor Claud Stanley Rupert cloned a gene called "photolyase" and managed to reproduce it at very high rates in bacteria by genetic engineering. Enabling the repair of DNA damaged by ultraviolet light with the enzyme encoded by the gene in question, this invention brought Aziz Sancar first a master's degree and then a PhD degree.
Between 1977 and 1982, he worked at Yale University Medical School. During this period, he interrupted his work on the photolyase enzyme and started research on nucleotide-cut repair. He completed his associate professorship thesis in DNA repair. Since 1997, he has been conducting his research at the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in North Carolina, USA, a city known for its biochemistry and biophysics research.
Working on DNA repair, cell sequencing, cancer treatment and biological clock, Prof.Dr. Sancar has 415 scientific articles and 33 books.
Sancar has received many awards for his use of the circadian clock in cancer treatment. In 2001, Sancar was awarded the North Carolina Distinguished Chemist Award by the American Chemical Society and in 2005, he was elected to the US National Academy of Sciences, one of the most prestigious memberships in the world of science, becoming the first Turkish American scientist to be elected to this academy. After receiving this award, he founded Aziz & Gwen Sancar Foundation with his wife to help Turkish students studying in the USA and to improve Turkish-American relations, and opened a student guesthouse named "Carolina Turkish House" in North Carolina, USA.
Prof. Dr. Sancar, the first Turkish American elected to the US National Academy of Sciences along with Mehmet Özdoğan, won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 2015 for his research mapping how cells repair damaged DNA and preserve genetic information.

With the release of the video, the project quickly became a global phenomenon.
After receiving his master’s degree in fine arts from Istanbul Bilgi University, he moved to the United States to attend the media arts program at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he received his second master’s degree. In 2014, his project titled “The Aether Project”, which he prepared as part of a course, was awarded the Microsoft Research Award and became the first art project to receive this award.
Founding his studio in 2015, Anadol exhibited his temporary installation titled "Infinity Room", which he created based on the question "if a computer's artificial intelligence was trying to create a space, where would it start?", at Zorlu Performing Arts Center in 2015. The Infinity Room project was then exhibited back-to-back at SXSW in Austin, Texas.
Unlike his other works, the data sculpture titled Virtual Depictions, which is a permanent work, was opened in San Francisco, USA in 2015. This 15x30-meter work was considered "the world's first visual data sculpture".
In 2016, Anadol took part in the Google Artists and Machine Intelligence program and started using artificial intelligence as a tool of art.
Anadol opened his second exhibition in Türkiye in 2018. The works he developed using brain wave data collected at the University of California neurology laboratories were exhibited at Pilevneli Gallery under the title “Melting Memories”. In September of the same year, he created a new site-specific data sculpture animation and projection work at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's centennial season opening celebrations. WDCH Dreams, a 12-minute animation, used a series of digitally abstracted photographs, audio and video recordings from the archive of concert halls.
Continuing to develop works in various locations around the world, Anadol designed the audiovisual installation “Machine Hallucination” to be exhibited in 2019 in Artechouse, a digital art space created at the historic Chelsea Market in New York. In 2020, he developed the project "Quantum Memories" using artificial intelligence for the NGV Triennial at the National Gallery in Melbourne, Australia.
In 2021, he opened the exhibition "Machine Memoirs: Space" at Pilevneli Gallery in Istanbul. The exhibition showcased dynamic paintings and data sculptures created by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory by blending two million data from telescopes sent into space with sound recordings from space and classical music. He also created a fifteen-minute AI cinema in which the audience can physically participate. Selected to participate in the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021, the artist's interactive installation titled "Alkazar Dreams" was opened to visitors at the former Alkazar Movie Theater in Beyoğlu in 2021.
